What Should I Expect on the Day of the Test?

The exam is computer-based and timed. You will have three hours to answer 150 questions. 125 questions are scored while 25 are unscored. The unscored questions won’t be marked, however, so you should do your best to answer correctly on all 150 questions.

Taking breaks on your own is allowed, however, the clock won’t be stopped on the test so it’s best to keep breaks to a minimum or avoid them altogether. Here are a few test day tips to help you avoid the need for breaks:

  • Get a good night’s rest and wake up early enough to eat a full breakfast so that you won’t be hungry during the exam.
  • Bring a light sweater or jacket that you can put on or take off as needed during the test.
  • Arrive 15-30 minutes early to check in and get acclimated to the environment.

Which Subjects Will Be Covered?

The CCRN is a highly-focused, practice-based exam that intends to measure your expertise and skill in successfully performing all aspects of a critical care nurse’s job. So it’s broken down into two main sections: clinical judgement and professional care/ethical practice. Those sections are further broken down into the following content areas:

  • Clinical Judgement (80% of questions)
    • 18% cardiovascular
    • 17% pulmonary
    • 20% endocrine/hematology/gastrointestinal/renal/integumentary
    • 13% Musculoskeletal/neurology/psychosocial
    • 14% Multisystem
  • Professional Care and Ethical Practice (20% of questions)
    • Advocacy/moral agency
    • Caring practices
    • Response to diversity
    • Facilitation of learning
    • Collaboration
    • Systems thinking

The content is entirely based on the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) Synergy Model for Patient Care. So you need to be familiar with this framework and procedures.

Clinical inquiry When Will I Find Out If I Passed?

The current minimum cutoff score is 87. That is, you must answer at least 87 out of the 125 scored questions correctly in order to pass and receive certification. You will get your score report immediately after taking the test.

Bear in mind that only 79% of candidates pass the test on their first attempt—meaning there’s a 21% chance you won’t pass the first time around. Avoid paying for retakes by scheduling your exam so that you have at least 4-8 weeks to prepare.
