The philosophical idea of an atom was developed by the Greek philosopher Democritus in 460 B.C. The idea of an atom was a result of a question pertaining to the limits of the division of matter. This idea was later dismissed by Aristotle and therefore given no merit by Greek philosophers or individuals. The atom is the smallest unit of matter that is composed of three sub-atomic particles: the proton, the neutron, and the electron. Protons and neutrons make up the nucleus of the atom, a dense and positively charged core, whereas the negatively charged electrons can be found around the nucleus in an electron cloud.
